After i purchased my computer last year, with great specs which includes extremely quick quad core processor, Ram to help its speed and a hard drive that stores more than I can hurl at it I have been checking out things that could improve the system I already have.

Firstly If your chipset is still cutting it with the market and is more than capable of working with the software you are using you don’t have to consider searching for a new one. If it isn’t you may want to consider a new mother board and chipset. Normally however once you start down this road it is probably worth just buying a new desktop as the separates often come in at more than a new PC.

Second if we take it that your chipset is quick enough, load up the Ram it gives your processor the room to work at top efficiency. Find out which board you have and type the serial number into the search engines and you will then be able to find what Ram your PC can use (the price of Ram has reduced by so much it’s a worthwhile investment).

3rd if you have a large collection of music or imagery that you want to stockpile, manipulate, access, play then have a separate extra speedy drive to allow you to access your data speedily don’t be tricked by large disc volumes which have a rotation and read speed RPM of 5400 not acceptable, 7400 exceptable and 9600 Yeha!. These first three are things that will effect your every day experience of computing.

4th If you have an aging computer that is great, but no longer cuts the mustard, you don’t need to get shot of it you can use it as an secondary system that you access when you need the data stored on that system and let it use applications in the background without effecting your new system in anyway. The use of a KVM Switch is brilliant for this as it permits you to flick between computers using the same Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to use both systems at the push of a swith.

Ensure you get the best Broadband connection you can afford. That doesn’t mean you have to have the massive file usage of an Austin Hughes Rack Mount Server to need a download speed that wont seem like its frozen when you download images, videos or music. Look on the net to discover a broadband provider in your localiy, then find out what the top download speed your telephone line can normally carry, rather than the one fronted by the broadband provider (it just stops you paying out lots of money for download rates you will never reach) if you can link in unlimited download amounts to this it helps though a lot of individuals get caught by the fair use policy if you use the internet a lot.

Hopefully this will have helped and I will provide more at some other time.
