Hard Disk Defragmentation - Essential Computer Maintenance

I guess it inevitable that if you own a computer that eventually it will slow down to a halt for no apparent reason. And if you ask your Pc literate buddies or your repair guy they will probably tell you it is because of a fragmented hard drive.

Let me see if anything I say next rings a bell with you. Is your computer so slow that you often compare it to an old lady or man on a Sunday morning drive in a Gremlin? Are you tired of opening up Internet Explorer and expecting one window but getting ten instead? Or you need to write a work document and you open up Microsoft Word and normally it should just pop right up because it is just writing text but takes twenty minutes if so read on.

When you install a program it will put it in whatever free space is available and these bits of data wind up being diced up and placed in several locations on the hard drive. Then you wind up deleting programs and these little spaces are now empty. You are unknowingly causing fragmentation. Imagine taking a clay pot and shattering it on the floor. Look at all those little pieces – you just fragmented a clay pot.

That’s almost how your hard disc looks. Over time it gets worse and worse. Programs that worked fast now work slower. Programs that worked slow now work slower or just stop completely and sit there for hours trying to find some piece of the puzzle.

Programs will always look for a chunk of space where it will fit but if your program is 10 megabytes and all it can find is a 5 megabyte chunk it will take it then it will look for another suitable chunk. It will continue like that until the entire file is on the computer.

You can perform Pc repairs until you are blue in the face, but unless you defragment your hard drive your computer or laptop will always be slow.

Hard disk Defragmentation is the process of reorganization. It is the Chapter 13 of computer utilities. The program will look at your hard drive and analyze the data – looking at the ends of codes to find the pairs and then create a plan of attack.

The utility will then run and snatch up these loose ends and do all sorts of computer mumbo jumbo and put the ends back together so that your 10 megabyte file is now as one. Your computer will run more smoothly than it has been. Run the tool once a month to ensure it stays that way. And that, my friends, is hard disk Defragmentation.

Transfer Files

Transfer programs from XP to Vista

The Windows easy transfer wizard will not transfer over programs. If you want to transfer over your old data you will need to purchase the best data transfer software. This is the only and I mean only program on the market that will transfer over programs to systems. I have looked around and yes there are other software packages out there to help transfer over user settings and accounts but not actual programs.

This type of software is not all too expensive. Most people can purchase this for a round 59 bucks. You may also want to get an easy transfer cable as well if you do not have a network or USB hard drive to back the data onto. With the easy data transfer cable you can just sync the two computers together using the data transfer software and in a few clicks the transfer will start. The time it takes will vary widely on how much data you have. It may take 20 minutes or even 3 hours if you have a ton of music and pictures. To sum it up here there is no free way to transfer programs from one computer to another.

There are some important things to consider when transferring over programs. For instance if you have XP and are moving to Vista then you will want to make sure the programs you are moving will work with Vista. Most printers need to updated software to work with Vista. Office programs will work just fine and most anti-virus program will as well. You should always check first. If you do not check you can always just uninstall the program if it does not work.

For a little more information on doing data transfer check out our How to transfer files site. We have many articles that take you step by step how to use the free Windows easy transfer wizard.

Drive Data Recovery - The Never Expected Event

Requiring data recovery is not uncommon. Simply delete a file you didn’t mean to, or have a sudden power outage, and data recovery may be necassary. Even with the best backup plan in place there are times when failure occurs - leading to data recovery.

Approaching data recovery is straight-forward: you can put together a disaster plan to keep the odds low that it will happen; or, you are already facing the inevitable and you just want to get on with the computer data recovery process as quickly as possible.

The Software Choice

Maybe you’ve already heard about it, maybe not: free data recovery is a choice. If you are dead broke or if you have made a simple mistake like deleting files, then this is something maybe worth trying. Otherwise, move on to data recovery software that is powerful enough to give you the results you want and need.

Being able to recover your data for nothing sounds great, but with data recovery software you usually get what you pay for. Ask yourself: Do I really want to go through this recovery process more than once? It’s no day at the beach. The bottom line is nothing worth having is going to be free.

Expert services

Anybody likes the idea of a cheaper solution - like file undelete products - but sometimes they don’t work. What do you do then?

Luckily, you get a second chance - data recovery service. The challenge here is sifting through all the site to see which data recovery company to contact. The easiest method to help you narrow the field is to have a set of qualifications to look for. Here is what I know…

Professional data recovery offers software in addition to services. So, when you find a website that has the right image, but doesn’t promote both choices, raise the red flag and move to the next one. Another warning is no toll-free number or just email support. One last point: data recovery experts are considered “expert” because they specialize in one field. So, test each person you call to see if they are willing to do something other than data recovery.

Pc Maintenence V Pc Purchase

It’s amazing the difference of opinions two Pc repair professionals can have over what constitutes the best service and advice to a computer repair customer. Personally I feel that we are all becoming far too complacent about what seems to be throwaway technology these days.

Interestingly this technician’s viewpoint was totally opposed to my own as he would happily recommend a client to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a new PC rather than spending hundreds of dollars repairing an older Pc.

Now taken in isolation I also would consider this very good advice as well, as throwing money at old hardware can be a lost cause. But that said there are wide number of variables that should be considered before recommending this course of action.

Sure we can take away the pain of the update by doing the data transfer for them but aren’t we already thinking along the wrong lines already. As a professional should we be taking the consultative approach here?

A majority of clients that I come across have simply never considered the need for ongoing Pc maintenance and some of them have had such slow systems that even when they are less than a year old they are considering getting rid of them.

This is not only bad for their pockets but is also dumping rubbish into the environment far sooner than is really necessary.

So is it really good advice to advise a client to renew as opposed to repair, well in my opinion first of all you need to ask how old the computer is and what it is being used for. This will help you give the client best advice.

Secondly is their really something wrong with the Pc or does the client just need a little help and understanding how to keep it running smoothly.

And thirdly, is there enough computer memory in the Pc to make it run efficiently. Chances are if it has been bought on a budget then the answer is almost certainly a big NO.

A small investment in a computer memory upgrade can really go a long way to increasing a systems performance, and this fact is quite often overlooked.

In a majority of cases a little computer maintenance goes a long way and if the client is interested you can show them a few tips and tricks to keep it running nice and smoothly themselves in the future.

Another good way to help your client save money is to use cheap used computer parts especially if they have an older system but it is still meeting their needs.

Ok, as business people this will not make us rich…..or will it? I would much more prefer to help a client and have a happy client who feels confident to refer friends and relatives on an on going basis than just “grow a job” beyond where it needs to be, which if the press is to be believed happens far too often than it really should.

How To Optimize Windows

How to optimize windows
Windows seems to get slower every day you use it. My system would constantly get slower and slower until I figured out how to optimize windows. All the duplicate files and invalid entries in the registry seem to have been the main reason why my computer kept slowing down. After trying the free scan from RegCure, I found tons of problems with my system and was able to clean it up. Since I now run RegCure regularly, I don’t even have to worry about it anymore.

Try the free scan and see if your system is as bad as mine - Free RegCure Scan.

Windows Vista The Best Operating System Or An Excuse To Upgrade

Early in 2007, Microsoft Windows users were excited when the newest operating system, Windows Vista, was finally released. It had been highly anticipated because it had been several years since Microsoft had produced a significant update to their system software. But, early reports of problems with Vista have scared many people away from making the switch from their current Windows version to Vista.

This article should help you navigate through the various considerations and help you to understand if now is the right time to make the move to Vista or if you should hold off for awhile. On the positive side, it has been noted that Vista seems to operate more reliably and with fewer operating system crashes than what people tend to experience with Windows XP.

Users also commented that with the Windows Vista upgrade, they noticed that some of the most basic functions of the Windows environment were improved. One of these areas of improvement was in the on-board help functions which helped to resolve issues faster and make trouble-shooting easier.

On the negative side of things, the search function in the Vista Home Basic version is not easily located on the desktop. Instead, the search function has been “buried” inside the applications or you need to go through the Start Menu. For some people this is not really a major issue, but for others who use this function frequently it has been reported as an annoyance.

So far there has been very little computer software written specifically for Vista. This is sure to change soon and no doubt there is a great deal of software development going on, with regard to writing applications specifically to take advantage of the new aspects of Vista.

However, this fact has led the computer pundits and experts to tell people that there is really no urgent need to make the move to Vista at this time. This is especially true if you are content with your system just the way it is, as it provides very little motivation to upgrade from Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Just like Xp however once you start adding a few programs it won’t be long before the reigistry starts getting bloated so it is re-assuring that the popular computer repair software utilities have been upgraded to cope with this latest release.

At the same time, for those who are looking at purchasing a new computer and wondering which Windows operating system to choose, the experts say that Vista is certainly stable enough. It makes sense when buying a new computer to go ahead and get the most current operating system available, as long as it will be trouble free.

With that said, most experts are saying that unless you are having problems and are not happy with the current version of Windows running on your machine, then upgrading to Windows Vista probably isn’t the best use of your resources at this point. There is no doubt that eventually all of these issues will be cleared up and taken care of, and at that time it will make sense to go ahead and make the switch.
